The Ghana Police Service, represented by DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, has delivered an update regarding the recent abduction of two Ghanaian women, who were successfully rescued in Nigeria through a joint operation with the National Signals Bureau (NSB) and the Nigerian Police Force. The Police Service reported that the victims were deceived into traveling to Nigeria after being targeted by an elaborate romance scam. Two Nigerian individuals masterminded this scheme by creating a fake Facebook profile, impersonating a Caucasian man, and enticing the unsuspecting women with marriage proposals. The victims, who made separate trips to Nigeria, were summoned for in-person meetings by their online “suitors.” Upon their arrival, they were kidnapped. Additionally, the Police revealed the apprehension of a suspect in Bolgatanga, Ghana, who works as a Mobile Money agent and has notable connections to an employee of a telecommunications firm. Investigations indicated that this telecom employee had provided the suspect with their official login information for the company’s SIM registration system. Utilizing this access, the suspect unlawfully registered SIM cards using the Ghana Card information of other individuals without their awareness or permission. These illegally acquired SIM cards were subsequently sold for GH¢150 each.
