The Conclave has chosen Robert Prevost as the new Pope, who will henceforth be known as Pope Leo XIV. Born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1955, Prevost obtained his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Villanova University in Pennsylvania before earning a diploma in theology from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He subsequently traveled to Rome to study canon law at the Pontifical Saint Thomas Aquinas University and was ordained as a priest in June 1982. In the later stages of his career, he served as a canon law instructor at the seminary in Trujillo, Peru. Although it is commonly believed that cardinal electors tend to avoid selecting a pope from the United States due to the country's significant global political influence, Prevost's extensive experience in Peru may have alleviated those concerns among the electors.
